Computer and internet Class

The Computer and Internet Class (CIC) is designed for individuals who have little or no computer experience, as well as the intermediate computer user. Through the class students become proficient in operating system fundamentals, basic MS Office applications and internet usage while exploring how computers can improve their access to crucial information and resources. The course is supported by Comcast Internet Essentials program and reaches out to residents in the Powelton, Mantua and greater West Philadelphia neighborhoods.  

Currently there are three levels, Basic, Beginners and Intermediate. Each module in Basic and Beginner classes is 4 week long.  Intermediate level is 12 weeks.  Classes are typically held at night for working adults who would like to improve their computer skills.  Topics addressed are the following:

  • Module 1 - Introduction to Computers
    • Windows 7
    • Computer System (hardware & software)
    • Programs, Documents, Folders & Files
  • Module 2 - The Internet
    • Internet Basics (getting on the internet, email, browsing, etc.)
    • Social Networking
    • Internet Security
    • Blogging
  • Module 3 - Microsoft Office
    • MS Word
    • MS Excel
    • MS PowerPoint
Schedule
CIC modules run every other month in sequence, usually two nights every week. Each class is 2 hours long, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM


Basic/Intro:  2 hours/day, twice a week for 12 weeks

This is an intro class for adult learners who have little exposure to computers and the Internet and require the extra practice with the keyboard and mouse.  Adults in the class learn to recognize computer hardware and software such as keyboards, monitors and mouse.  They will practice basic mouse skills and navigate within a Windows operating system.  Students will be introduced to topics in Beginners Module 1 class.

Beginners:  2 hours/day, twice a week for 12 weeks

This class is designed for those who completed Basic class or are more comfortable navigating the menus and Windows desktop environment.   In this level, they learn more about the following modules: 


Intermediate:  2 hours/week for 12 weeks

This class is designed for participants who graduate from the Beginners computer program.  The Intermediate class uses a Business Plan Concept to discuss all 4 main programs of Microsoft Office.  MS Word is used to create a template for the entire concept; MS Excel is used to lean fundamental business financials; MS Publisher for marketing and brand awareness and MS PowerPoint to prepare a presentation on the business concept before the entire class.  Microsoft Internet Explorer and other browsers will also be used to help students unlock the potential of the Internet.
